Fear often grips us in many ways. It will rob us of our calling, dreams and aspirations in life. It will keep us stagnant and cause us to be terrified of change. Fear becomes dangerous when it prevents you from seeking help and direction.
When we don’t know what is going to happen next at our job, at school, or in life, our minds begin to tell us that we have to plan for the worst-case scenarios. All of these questions begin to pop up in our heads like, what if I fail? What if this does not work out? What if I am not able to do what others expect me to do? The fear of the unknown does not feel good. It can cause us to overthink constantly, and it can make us so fearful that it leads to anxiety.
Here are some ways to work through fear when it arises:
When your mind tells you that in order to feel safe you need to know what’s going to happen next, you can:
- Plan for the best-case scenarios instead of the worst-case scenarios. Do not stay stuck or complacent in a situation that is unhealthy just because it is familiar to you.
Many times, our past experiences like trauma, betrayal, loss, or instability make you feel like change is risky, so you can:
- Communicate your feelings to others that support you, acknowledge your fears, and/or seek professional help if necessary.
If fear is stemming from loss of control, you can:
- Practice releasing the sense of control and learn how to let go of your old beliefs. This task is not easy and will cause discomfort, but change is not always comfortable.
Remember, that God does not give us a spirt of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
